What I find most interesting about the My Happy Pillow is the face behind the invention. At age 6, a little girl named Isabella came up with the idea for a special plush pillow to help children express their emotions. With help from her dedicated mom, Julia, and a very talented stuffed animal creator named Margaret, the My Happy Pillow was born. Today, My Happy Pillow characters are quickly making their way into the homes and hearts of little ones all around the country! What an amazing accomplishment for a caring little girl with a dream to help other children!
Over the course of my interactions with Wendy, the very kind PR spokesperson of My Happy Pillow, we thought that it would be a great idea to hold an interview with Isabella and share a little bit more about her with the world. After all, who wouldn’t want to know more about someone as special and creative as Isabella?
Isabella told me that she invented the pillow “because it was interesting what my mom was doing, and I wanted to make something, too.” (Isabella’s mom makes products for retailers.) The idea for the pillow came when she saw a TV character take her aggression out on a pillow. Isabella thought that it’d be great to make a pillow for kids to use to express anger.
2) What do you want to be when you grow up?
“A Five Below worker or a singer! My favorite songs are on Radio Disney.”
3) What do your friends think of your invention?
“They like it!”
4) Do you have a favorite My Happy Pillow character?
“Yes! I like Rosie the Dog the best because I have a dog, too.”
5) Do you have any other great ideas or inventions that you’re excited about?
“Yes, but my invention is extremely hard to make. It’s a little machine that gives you candy when you say ‘I want candy!’”
6) What is something (anything!) that you wish for?
“I wish for my best friend to be my sister.”
7) What is your favorite book?
“My favorite book is called ‘Sisters.’ It’s about three emojis that have mad faces, but then they work out their problems and are happy at the end. It’s a chapter book.” (I also found out that Isabella loves comic books!)
8) Do you have any pets?
“Yes. I have a dog named Gordy. I really want a hamster, too!”
9) Did you name your My Happy Pillow characters?
“My mom and I named them. I named Sunny the Bear, Zee the Monkey, Rosie the Dog, and Spotty the Giraffe.”
10) Who has helped you to make your My Happy Pillow idea come to life?
“There’s a lady named Margaret that my mom knows who makes stuffed animals. She made the pillows for us.”
11) What school subject do you like best?
“Art. In art, we do creative things, and the art teacher did a fun project called Cartoon World where we draw cartoon characters. The art teacher takes our characters and puts them on a picture of the Earth.”
12) What is your favorite dessert?
“A lot of things! My three favorites are candy, brownies, and cupcakes!”
13) Where is your favorite fun place to visit?
“St. John’s!” (In the Caribbean.) “We go there every year. My favorite thing about vacation is to be with my family.”
14) What do you think makes for a good friend?
“A good friend is unique and doesn’t listen to other people when they say something to them.” (Isabella was referring to not following the “in crowd” and falling for peer pressure.) “A friend is also caring and listens to the teacher.”
