This past November, I began a journey creating what has become one of my most treasured possessions- my Memory Jar. If you’ve never heard of Memory Jar, I am honored to be the person who introduces you to this amazing invention. Before I do, I must give a special shout out to Mara from Get Out Mama for connecting me with the dedicated and creative minds behind Memory Jar. Thank you, Mara, for thinking of me!
About Memory Jar:
A Memory Jar is an all new, personalized keepsake that you create by text messaging special memories to be printed onto colored paper and placed into a decorative box or jar. Memory Jar was born when husband and wife, Chris and Emily Stahl, changed their focus in life to being more mindful, living in the present, and fully enjoying the priceless and irreplaceable moments with their three children. Rather than trying to recall and write down special family memories hours or days after they had happened, Chris and Emily came up with a way to add their thoughts directly to a Memory Jar as the memories were made. To get a better idea about how Memory Jar works, check out Memory Jar's promo video about saving life's amazing small moments.
** UPDATE (2/9/16)- Memory Jar now utilizes an all new free app instead of a text-messaging system. (The app is featured in the video below.) Same rules apply- type your memories, and send them off to Memory Jar. And here's an AMAZING added bonus: you can now send photos to your jar!
My Memory Jar Experience:
I can think of many occasions or themes for a Memory Jar, such as family vacations, weddings, baby's milestones, love notes/well wishes to a special person, favorite recipes, and so many more. As a highly sentimental, family-oriented mommy, the decision to focus my jar around special memories made with my daughter and family came easily. (I mean, what mom wouldn’t want a priceless written collection of amazing family moments to cherish forever?) Since the holiday season was quickly approaching, I chose to document memories about Christmas and all the things that we did leading up to December 25th and through the beginning of the New Year. I texted special traditions, my daughter’s funny sayings and actions, random sentimental thoughts, and day-to-day holiday preparations and happenings to my Memory Jar.
Setting up my Memory Jar was free and easy. Yes, starting a jar is FREE! Memory Jar allows you to send messages to your jar with the option of purchasing later on. So, there’s really nothing to lose in trying it out! The simple process of setting up my jar involved visiting the Memory Jar website, creating an account, and awaiting my first text from Memory Jar.
** UPDATE (2/9/16)- With the new free app that was recently launched, starting a Memory Jar involves downloading the app from MemoryJar.com and creating your user account directly from the application! So simple, and still FREE! Here's a peek at what the new app looks like:
Sending memories to my jar was convenient and fun! In the past, I’ve made an effort to write down special family moments and my daughter’s silly/memorable sayings into a book that I keep tucked away in my desk. Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten to document some things simply because my to-do list distracts me or time between when the memory occurred and my opportunity to write it down causes me to forget exactly what my tot said or what made something so funny. With my smartphone always nearby, it was convenient to pull it out and send a memory whenever and wherever I wanted. Sometimes I banked memories right on the spot (for example, at a restaurant during dinner); other times, I’d sit down in the evening and send reflections of the day. I often would add to my jar while sitting in the passenger seat on car rides home from holiday family outings while the thoughts were fresh in my mind.
The more memories I put in my jar, the more I fell in love with it. My Memory Jar quickly became one of my most treasured possessions, and it hadn’t even existed yet! To make the experience even more special, Memory Jar sent the most adorable little gift in the mail. It was a mini Memory Jar containing my very first memory. The mini jar made me feel appreciated and gave me an idea of what my finished jar would look like. Everyone who begins a Memory Jar receives a mini jar of their first memory. What a special personal touch!
After the holidays, it was time to finalize and order my Memory Jar. The process was super simple! I logged into my account via the website and purchased the jar of my choice. (My Memory Jar was a gift in exchange for this review, and I went through the purchase process using a coupon code.) The challenging part for me was deciding which jar I wanted! There are many beautiful jars (and even paper mache boxes) to choose from (see them HERE), as well as 9 paper colors and 2 folding styles. After much deliberation, I decided upon the Apothocary Jar with scrolled paper in red and white with the silver rings.
My Memory Jar:
My Memory Jar arrived just five days after I ordered it. Talk about speedy prep and shipping! It was packed in recyclable shipping material (kudos for being environmentally friendly, Memory Jar) and wrapped in blue tissue paper with a sparkly decorative sticker.
Unwrapping my jar felt like Christmas all over again! And when I saw my gift, I couldn’t help but give it a great big hug. Yep, I hugged my Memory Jar, and I’m not ashamed to admit it! I was so very happy that it was home, and it was an incredible feeling knowing that my memories were now tangible and accessible whenever I wanted.
The quality of my holiday Memory Jar is everything I’d hoped it would be. The glass is heavy and durable, the paper scrolls are clean and bright, and the text on the scrolls is crisp and clear. I’m also thrilled with the appearance of my Memory Jar. The silver rings around the scrolls make the jar eye-catching and dynamic. It looks beautiful on display, and I’ve already had a few guests admire it and comment that it would make for a lovely gift.
I can’t say enough about the positive experience that I had with Memory Jar. I’m in love with this unique and creative idea, and I’d recommend Memory Jar to anyone who is searching for a personal, thoughtful gift or a convenient and fun way to document their own special memories. I will treasure my holiday Memory Jar forever, and I look forward to making a new tradition of reading my scrolls every year at Christmas time.
