I am impressed with the learning and teaching opportunities that Oliver Poons and the Bright Yellow Hat has to offer. First and foremost, the characters' traits aren't over-the-top or unrealistic. They resemble personalities that children will come across in real life, which makes learning from the story more valuable and authentic. In the beginning of the story, Oliver Poons crosses paths with a character named Orange Kitty (see photo below). Orange Kitty is a bit of a bully, and his unkind words and foolery cause Oliver to second guess whether he should wear his favorite yellow hat. The plot and characters teach children about respect, kindness, friendship, active problem solving, and the importance of staying true to oneself.
